Minutes of the Meeting of the Dallas Chapter
TEXAS SOCIETY SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
September 9, 2006
The meeting was called to order at 8:32 a.m. in the Mesquite Room at the Embassy Suites, (13131 North Central Expressway, Dallas, Texas) by Chapter President, Tom Smith. The head table was introduced. Most members had previously processed through the breakfast line. Chaplain Frank Pounders reported that former member C.A. Kepler had died since the last meeting. The Chaplain then proceeded to give the Invocation for the day.
Pledges of Allegiance to the United States Flag, the Texas Flag and the Salute to the SAR Flag were led by FSP Dick Arnold, Genealogist General Chuck Bragg and Chancellor General Ed Butler, respectively. Past Chapter President Judge Tracy Pounders led the singing of “America”. Head greeter Ralph McDowell then introduced his assistants for the morning, Compatriots Glen Toal and Gerald Tyler.
The President next recognized a total of eleven guests at the meeting which included a number of prospective members. We were also honored by the attendance of President General White, Chancellor General Butler and Genealogist General Bragg. Also attending were several members’ wives. PCP and Jokemeister Art Ingalls then enlivened the meeting with the joke for the day. President Smith then showed the attendees the Outstanding Chapter Activity Award which was presented to FCP Art Ingalls.
The reading of the minutes of the previous meeting were dispensed with upon motion by Judge Tracy Pounders and seconded by Gerald Tyler. The Americanism program that then presented by State Chancellor and Chapter Second VP Bob Clark who spoke on his patriotic ancestor Matthew Clark. Chapter president Tom Smith then made a number of announcements, including that FCPs Ralph McDowell and Cliff Slagle still had openings for volunteers for service at the SAR table at the Jane Douglas DAR House during the Texas State Fair. President Smith then announced that the Dallas Chapter had won the President General’s Chapter Activity Award at last summer’s National SAR Congress in Dallas.
The chapter president then proceeded with reports of officers. PG Nathan White addressed the chapter and thanked those members and wives who had volunteered and assisted at the National Congress in Dallas last July. FCP Tom Whitelock then gave his District 6 report. Compatriot Whitelock discussed the state and national youth events, including the poster, oration, and essay contests.
Treasurer Byron Christian reported that 28 members were in attendance and that the checking account was at $1,436.56. The Minuteman Fund had a balance of $8,297.96 and the Richie Fund totaled $27,618.64.
Registrar Jim Templin presented Mr. Bill Barnard a certificate for a new supplemental for his ancestor John Statham. Mr. Thomas Robert Leslie was then sworn in as a new member, whose ancestor was Captain Peter Reasoner. His sponsor was FCP Cliff Slagle. There are now 297 active members, with 18 pending applications.
First Vice president and Color Guard Commander, Dr. Charles Baker, made several color guard announcements and then introduced the speaker for the meeting, Dr. Ed Contryman, a history professor at Southern Methodist University. Dr. Countryman gave a talk “Spies and Traitors in the Revolution.”
It was announced that members may want to attend the annual DAR Constitution Day Brunch the next Saturday at the Lakewood Country Club. The Chapter next unanimously endorsed Genealogist General Chuck Bragg for re-election and Ed Butler for Treasurer General of the National Society next year.
After the door prize drawing conducted by Treasurer Byron Christian, the Benediction was given by Chaplain Pounders, which was followed by the SAR Closing led by Chapter President Smith, who adjourned the meeting at 10:05 a.m.
