MEMBERSHIP
With more than 27,000 members, the 119-year-old
National Society of the SAR is one of the
largest patriotic
organizationsin the
United States. To qualify as a compatriot,
a man must be able to show that he has at least
one
ancestor who served
under
George Washington in the Continental Army or a state militia or under
John Paul Jones in the
Colonial Navy, or
supplied such things as cash, weapons, ammunition, food,
clothing, horses or mules
to the forces
fighting for American freedom from Britain.
The 2,500-member Texas Society is the largest in
the SAR,
which has chapters in
all 50
states, Asia, Europe and Mexico.
