October Meeting
Two local men and one from the Gulf Coast area are the newest members of one of the nation's oldestand largest patriotic organizations. Stephen Short and Duane Whitlow of Kerrville and Randy.Pearson
of the Katy area were inducted Wednessday into the Hill Country Chapter of the Sons of the American
Revolution, during the group's October luncheon meeting at Rails Restaurant.

Chapter President Gerald Irion presented the SAR's Fire Prevention Award to Ted Smith, Kerrville Fire Marshall. While Smith was recognized primarily for his efforts in preventing fires and injuries
resulting from conflagrations, Irion noted that he has additional major responsibiliities as an arson
investigator and a peace officer.

Smith acknowledged the award on behalf of the· Kerrville Fire Department and explained some of the fine
points in determining whether a blaze is acciidental or arson. He noted that the state fire marshal and
insurance investigators work closely with local fire departments in determining how fires start and who
is to blame.
November meeting
The Texas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution has awarded its
Service to Veterans Medal with ten silver oak leaves to Bill Nelms of the
Hill Country Chapter. The award recognizes more than 13,000 hours of volunteer
work over more than 25 years at the Kerrville hospital of the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs, which serves more than 18,000 veterans through out the Hill Country.

presented the medal and an accompanying certificate
to Nelms on behalf of the Texas Society.
Irion announced that the Patriot Medal of the Texas
Society will be presented early in 2010 to Winston
J. Scott, vice president of the Hill Country Chapter
and a former president of that group. The award,
recognizing long and distinguished service to the
area chapter and the state entity, is the highest
honor that the Texas Society can give, and can be
awarded only once in a person's lifetime. Scott,
a decorated Chief Warrant Officer 5 who spent 31
years in the Marine Corps, has held most positions in
the Hill Country Chapter and has been nominated for vice president of District 3 of
veteran of both Army and Marine Corps service, has been nominated for the Gen. William
C. Westmoreland Award, given by the National Society of the Sons of the American
Revolution. The award is given once a year to one person and can be received only once
in a person's lifetime. Nelms and his fellow members of the Hill Country Chapter, known
as Compatriots, will learn next year whether he has received the honor. Meantime, he
received a standing ovation from chapter members as
Irion made the presentation of the state medal at the November 10 luncheon.
The presentation for the meeting was given by
Winston J. Scott and was entitled “The uniform
tells the Story” Scottie wore his dress “blues”
and told the story behind each part of the uniform.
This included the red stripe on the pants to the rope
braid on the hat to the service metals.

Patriotic group's membership tops 100
as three Hill Country men are inducted
Induction of three men from the Hill Country has given the Hill Country Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution a membership of 101 -- a milestone for this branch of one of the nation's oldest and largest patriotic organizations.
Hill Country Chapter President Gerald Irion swore in Leslie Dorety of Kerrville, Ron Girard of Mountain Home and H. D. Maxwell of Tierra Linda during the annual summer social event on July 14. More than two dozen chapter members plus their spouses and guests welcomed the new Compatriots at the conclusion of the meal.
The chapter is a part of the National Society of the SAR, which has state societies and other groups in every state plus Europe, Asia and Latin America. Its missions include fostering respect for America's heritage and for the Founding Fathers and others who contributed to the American fight for freedom from Britain, promoting the teaching of American history in elementary and secondary schools, recognizing those who display the American Flag and supporting the nation's veterans
