Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter
SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
CHAPTER 28 LUFKIN, TEXAS

Minutes November 17, 2011

A meeting of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter, S.A.R., was held at 7 PM November 17, 2011 at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Lufkin.  Members and guests started arriving after 6 PM to enjoy a Dutch Treat dinner before the meeting.

President Neal Naranjo led the assemblage in the pledge to the American Flag, the Texas Flag and the SAR Flag   Bob Ham gave the invocation   Then Naranjo asked Fred Preston to come forward and introduce the guests  The guests were June Everheart, Chris Axelson (prosp. member), Richard and Belinda Rosenberg, Sam and Mary Griffin, Charlene Ham, Vicki Gann, Betty Preston, Dickie Dixon and Sylvia Marrs.   Members present were Neal Naranjo, Donald Stallings, Bill Royle, Martin Netherland, Tom Gann, Mike Everheart, Harold Newsom, Bob Ham and Fred Preston. All told 9 members and 11 guests plus the speaker.

Neal asked for a treasury report and Harold indicated we had $1691 in the checking account and a CD for $5,000 which drew several cents interest.

Old Business:  Preston reported that he has ordered the flag stand, one stand to replace one that is missing.  This is a welded stand made of scrap castings by Boy Scout Troop 518.  Neal then talked about Flag Certificates but thus far none have been awarded this year.  It has been agreed to give one to Gann Medford Real Estate and one to Toyota Motors.   There was discussion about giving service awards and Neal indicated he hadn't been able to come up with any who were recommended by their superior.  Everheart indicated we need to do this before the end of the year.

Also under Old Business, the Certificates of Appreciation need to be given to Pineywoods Academy students who participated in the Poster Contest last Winter.

Preston reported he had contacted both Pineywoods Academy and Saint Cyprians about the Poster Contest for 2011-2012 on The Battle of Guiliford's Court House.   Preston has also started looking for Eagles and contacted the Scout Representative in the area.

New Business:  We did not participate in the Veterans Parade or the Honor America Night because Naranjo assumed Preston wouldn't be able to participate due to a minor stroke.  This wasn't true but nevertheless, we need more people in uniform so we can participate in more color guard activities.   Naranjo made a motion to purchase two used Continental Army Uniforms (same colors as ours, VA, PA and MD) for up to $300 each and then find some one in our membership to wear the uniform.  Motion was seconded and approved.   Preston did participate in a DAR meeting with the Anthony Smith Chapter of Lufkin observing Veterans day on Tuesday November 1st.   Speaker was Lt. General Oren Whiddon.

Naranjo indicated his two year term was up and we needed to elect officers.   After some discussion the slate will remain the same as previous except Bob Ham does not want to be VP, so we do not have a first or second vice president.

Naranjo then introduced the speaker for the evening, TXSSAR State President William Marrs.  William joined the SAR in 1990 and served on just about every position in the "Heart of Texas Chapter" which meets in Salado, TX   He has held a number of state positions, State Corresponding Secretary, State Registrar, State Secretary and others  His original patriot was Bedford from North Carolina.  He has since proven 11 other Patriots.   He talked about the Texas State Web site and how to use it and then he talked about his North Carolina patriots.

William Marrs, TXSSAR President.

L to R: Pres. Neal Naranjo, William Marrs and VP Bob Ham, presenting Certificate of Appreciation for his talk.

Naranjo thanked William Marrs for his presentation and he and VP Bob Ham presented Bill with a Certificate of Appreciation.  Naranjo then led the assemblage in the Closing Admonition.  Meeting was adjourned about 8:30 PM.
