Under Old Business, Preston reported the Duane Hedberg will enter the History Teacher contest next year.  Also noted that the History Teacher contest is called the Tom and Betty Lawrence History Teacher Contest, named after the speaker's parents.

J. Neal Naranjo II was approved as of March 24, 2009 and is our newest member.

Since Neal wasn't present we didn't have an update on the Declaration of Independence project.

Preston also reported he has not heard anything from Wal-Mart on the application for a grant.

Preston reported on the annual State Meeting held in Nacogdoches at the Fredonia Hotel on March 20,21 and 22.  Certificates of appreciation were given to Tom Gann, Jeff Corbett and Burl Ivy for their participation in the meeting.  Burl went to help but was told they were fully staffed so he didn't actually work at the registration desk. Registration at the meeting was about 105 to 110 from across the state. Pictures were available at the back table.

L to R: Burl Ivy, Tom Gann and Jeff Corbett, recognized for their service at the state meeting.

New Business: A sheet was handed out to members on the current membership which stands at 42.  12 perpetual members, 27 regular and 3 dual members.

Preston indicated he will be looking for volunteers to visit the schools to hand out certificates of appreciation to the students some time in April.

Preston indicated he would get an article in the newspaper about the Eagle Scout scholarship contest and would enter the article several times during the summer.

At this time, Preston started talking about the Poster Contest and asked the students some  questions about Paul Revere.  How many riders were there, their names, did Paul Revere finish the ride, why do we remember Paul Revere and not the others, etc.  Rachael Meyer answered some of the questions.  It was pointed out that the purpose of the contest is to get children to study history of our country.

At this time Alexia Estrada was called forward for the 3rd place Certificate and check and she was given her poster.

Rachael Meyer was awarded 2nd place and given a check and certificate. Alexia and Rachael were from Pineywoods Academy.

Corinne Rudis from St. Cyprian's Episcopal School was awarded 1st place.

The awards were $25, $15 and $10 respectfully.  At the time the awards are presented at each school they will be the same.  Preston pointed out that there were only 24 posters judged at the State meeting so the odds of winning are pretty good.

Preston then introduced the speaker for the evening, Tom Lawrence, the newly elected President of the Texas State Society, Sons of the American Revolution.

Tom is a Justice of the Peace in Houston and has been very active in SAR.  He gave a very good talk about the various contests sponsored by SAR in an effort to get students to study more about American History.  Also the various things SAR does to award patriotism and heroism. Tom also talked about the new state website and use of email in mass mailing.  It was a very inspiring talk.

The next meeting will be May 28.  Speaker to be announced.

Preston closed the meeting about 8:10.
Respectfully submitted: Fred Preston
