WORLD WAR II VETERANS RECOGNITION DAY
MAY 29, 2004
Lufkin Mayor Louis Bronaugh (Center) signs World War II Veterans Recognition Day Proclamation. A National World War II Memorial will be dedicated on May 29 in Washington, D. C. and Mayor Bronaugh will be in attendance. May 29, 2004 is a day of recognition for all those who served in World War II and the more than 400,000 who gave their lives that others could live free.
On the left is Fred Preston, President of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and on the right is Rita Foster, Public Relations Representative for Division I, Department of Texas, American Legion Auxiliary.
During WWII a program was created for mothers of sons in active military service. This program was called "Blue Star Mothers". The American Legion passed a resolution in 2001 to revitalize the concept for entire families. The program is now known as "Blue Star Service Banner" program. Rita Foster is trying to get the program revived in Lufkin and is seeking volunteers to help with this project.
