PROJECTS

It is the intent that this page will show active and proposed projects of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter of the SAR.

Proposed projects are:

  1. Poster Contest for 5th grade students (only).
  2. Eagle Scout Program
  3. Flag Retirement Ceremonies and collecting worn and faded flags.

The Poster Contest is to stimulate interest in American History, specifically the Revolutionary War.  Each school participating would judge their posters and submit to our chapter the best three in their opinion.  At our January meeting we, the members of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter, would rank the three posters from each school as 1st, 2nd and 3rd.  We would then judge the 1st place posters to select an overall chapter winner.   This poster would be submitted to State competition.  One winning poster from the State would be submitted for National Competition.  The chapter awards would be $25 for 1st place, $15 for second and $10 for 3rd place for the overall winners.  In addition the chapter awards $25, $15 and $10 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each school.  The overall winner would thus get $50.  Awards would be presented at our March meeting.  Sometime in April, we will present Certificates of Appreciation to all of the participants from all schools.

Posters are judged by the following criteria:

  1. Does the poster express the annual theme ?
  2. Does the poster show originality by the student ?
  3. Does the poster show evidence of research ?
  4. Does the poster show artistic merit and creativity ?
  5. Craftsmanship-physical condition
  6. Technique/texture-Use of different media
  7. Gradation-gradation of colors
  8. Unity-Scale and balance
  9. Is the poster neat ?

One thing to keep in mind is that the winning poster will be mailed to the State Competition, rolled up in a 3 inch tube.  This will limit texturing.

See the Poster Guidelines

Poster contest deadlines.  Posters must be submitted to the Chapter at least one day prior to the January meeting (Fourth Thursday).  State judging will be in March and National judging in July.

Another project is the Eagle Scout program.

Open to all Eagle Scouts who are currently registered in an active unit and have not reached their 19th birthday during the year of application. (The application year is the calendar year, 01 Jan. to 31 Dec.) The year that Eagle was awarded is not restricted. College plans do not need to be completed in order to receive the cash award.  Chapter awards are $300 first place and $150 second place.  The State winner receives $1500.  National has three cash: as the National First Place winner - $8,000.00; Runner-up - $4,000.00; 2nd runner-up - $2,000.00. You may apply more than one year if you meet the age requirements but no more than $8,000.00 total may be granted to any one Eagle Scout.

Entrants need to complete only one application -- the one for the chapter competition. If it is a winner it is then used for the state competition, and if it is a winner again it is used for the national competition.

The application consists of:
1. The two page application form   70% of score
2. The Four Generation ancestor chart. 10% of score
3. The 500 word essay  20% of score.

Applications should be mailed or brought to a chapter member, Fred Preston or Tom Gann at Gann Medford Real Estate, or Dr. Neal Naranjo at A. PineyWoods Home Health
