Chapter President Gerry Gieger and Compatriot Mike Connelly presented the
2019 Law Enforcement Medal and Certificate to Officer Joel Zuniga of the
Fort Worth Police Department. A large number of his fellow Fort Worth
officers attended, including Assistant Chief Ed Krause who spoke to the
group and offered his thanks and answered questions from the group.

 

Sea Cadet Award

Compatriot James Alderman attended the
Lone Star Squadron Sea Cadet Banquet at
Joint Base Carswell on Saturday, January 26th.
James presented the Bronze Good Citizenship
Award to CPO Mitchell D. Meaders. Pictured

Texas Society Secretary Drake Peddie presented SAR Color Guard medals posthumously to Mrs. Lila Davidson,
widow of Compatriot David Davidson who passed away on October 1, 2018. Eight members of Compatriot
David Davidson’s family attended the presentation of SAR Color Guard medals to him posthumously.

At our April chapter meeting, Vice President Chase Sanger
inducted new members Bill Meaders, His son Brian Meaders,
and his grandson Mitchell Meaders. Secretary Ron Turner
assisted by pinning the SAR Rosette on each new member.
In addition, Mitchell was our chapter’s Sea Cadet Award
winner and is also National Sea Cadet of the Year.

The Mt. Gilead Historic Cemetery Association held their Memorial Day Commemoration. The city of Keller
joined the cemetery association to celebrate the local community and to honor those who gave their lives
for our country. The Boy Scouts conducted a flag retirement ceremony; distinguished speakers talked about
veterans, what they gave and what they give today; and the Frontier Band entertained everyone with music
for the occasion. A Color Guard made up of a contingent of riflemen from various organizations fired a
rifle volley in salute.
The Color Guard (l to r) consisted of Mike Edwards (local chapter president, Sons of the Republic of Texas),
Kevin Shellman (Sons of the American Revolution), Jim Young (War of 1812), Terry Theiss (Frontier Band),
James Alderman (Sons of the American Revolution), Kent Mathews (French and Indian Wars), Paul Porter (World War I),
and Mike Patterson (Sons of Confederate Veterans).

Two Van Zandt Chapter dual members participated in the marking of 16 Patriot Graves
in Portsmouth, VA. Doug Schwetke presented the Van Zandt chapter wreath at both ceremonies,
Cedar Grove Cemetery and Trinity Episcopal Church, and his brother, Bill Schwetke,
commanded the Color Guard. The Culpeper Minute Men Chapter of the Virginia Society
sponsored the events.

Compatriot Bill Covington of the Arlington Chapter was our guest speaker
in July. Bill is a high school history teacher, an avid historian, and
speaks frequently on the Revolutionary War. Bill’s presentation was on
"The Continental Soldier of the American Revolution".
Bill talked about the equipment and weapons carried by the Continental
soldier during the course of the American Revolution.
